Nine days. Two cities. KTX rail, world-class spas, serious food, and shopping you can't do anywhere else.
October is Korea's sweet spot β crisp autumn air, fall foliage on Namsan Mountain, no summer crowds. We'll spend four nights in Seoul doing the things we loved last time (and found new spots), then board the KTX for Busan: beach city, seafood market, the country's most celebrated spa, and a side of coastal drama you can only get there.
Flights are nonstop SFOβICN on United. Park Hyatt Busan is booked on points (80,000 Chase Hyatt points per person if sharing a room, 4 nights). Seoul hotel is cash β see options below.
Rough shape β still some flex built in. Seoul first, Busan to close. The KTX ride is an experience in itself.
United UA893 Β· Departs 10:25am, arrives Seoul next day 3pm. Nonstop, 12h 35min. Settle in, recover.
UA893 arrives ICN at 3:00pm. Clear customs, grab the KAL Limousine bus or taxi (~1hr) to the hotel. Check-in depends on which Seoul hotel we land on:
Option A β RYSE (Hongdae): 10 min walk from Hongik Univ. Station (Line 2). Local energy, indie boutiques, Korean BBQ everywhere. Blue Bottle in the lobby, Gentle Monster's original flagship is a short walk away. Best flat Han River access β 15β20 min run south to the Mapo/Yeouido riverside path.
Option B β JW Marriott Seoul (Banpo-dong): Connected to Lines 3, 7, 9, sits above Shinsegae Dept Store. Seorae Village (cafΓ©s, French expat enclave) is walkable. Banpo Hangang Park and the flat river path are ~0.5 miles away β Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain runs evenings through October. Multiple rooms have Han River views.
Morning: group Korean cooking class (fits 4β6) β market tour at Mangwon Market, hands-on kimchi, bulgogi, japchae, eat what you make. Book via Airbnb Experiences or Viator. ~$80β100/pp. (Flag Stanley's shrimp allergy when booking β chefs accommodate.) Afternoon: head to Seongsu-dong β MUSINSA Megastore, ADERERROR, Matin Kim, Covernat, Gentle Monster's NUDAKE for matcha croissants. Salt bread at Cafe Onion. Evening: sav.seoul wine bar.
Lunch at Born & Bred 2F (Casual Tasting Menu, ~$120/pp) β book via Catchtable. Afternoon: Ikseon-dong Hanok Village β a maze of restored hanok alleys turned into cafΓ©s, cocktail bars, and small boutiques, with a much more low-key, local crowd than Bukchon. While there, swing by the Gentle Monster flagship β avant-garde eyewear in an installation-art setting, worth a visit even if you don't buy anything. Evening free in Itaewon near the hotel.
Morning: Bukhansan National Park β the Baegundae Peak trail (836m, ~3β4hr round trip), the classic route with sweeping views over Seoul and peak fall foliage in October. Getting there: from Hannam-dong, take the subway to Gupabal Station (Line 3, ~30 min with one transfer), then bus 704 to the Bukhansanseong trailhead (~20 min). Total door-to-trailhead is about an hour. Wear real hiking shoes β the upper section involves rope-assisted rock scrambling.
Afternoon: head straight to Dragon Hill Spa β Seoul's most famous jjimjilbang, rooftop garden, multiple themed saunas, traditional Korean body scrub (seshin). Perfect timing for sore legs. Book the full package. Evening: Gangnam for dinner.
Morning: bespoke leather shoes on Seongsu-dong Shoe Street (~$110β220, made by craftsmen here since the 1970s). Check out of hotel, board ~1β2pm KTX β 2h 15min to Busan, arrives early afternoon. Check into Park Hyatt Busan β located in Marine City, Haeundae-gu, with floor-to-ceiling views of the marina and the twin skyscrapers of Marine City framing the bay.
The neighborhood: Haeundae is Busan's beach district β the hotel is walking distance from Haeundae Beach (5 min) and Gwangalli Beach is a short taxi. The Centum City shopping and Spa Land complex is one subway stop away. Dozens of beachfront cafΓ©s and seafood restaurants within a 10-min walk.
Morning: Gamcheon Culture Village β hillside murals, indie cafΓ©s, winding alleys that look like a painting. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple on the sea cliffs (one of Korea's most dramatic). Afternoon/evening: Spa Land at Shinsegae Centum City β 18 mineral hot spring pools, 13 themed saunas, seshin body scrub. The best spa in Korea by any measure. Budget half a day here.
Day trip to Tongyeong β a coastal town about 1.5β2hrs from Busan. Getting there: intercity bus from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Bus Terminal to Tongyeong Bus Terminal (~1h40min, departures every 20β30 min, no reservation needed). Highlights: the Tongyeong Cable Car up Mireuksan for panoramic views over the harbor and islands, Dongpirang Mural Village (hillside alleys covered in murals, cafΓ©-hopping), and Tongyeong Central Market for fresh seafood and chungmu gimbap (the town's signature dish). Aim for an early bus to make the most of the day.
Evening: back in Busan, head to Jagalchi Fish Market β pick live fish from the stalls, they cook it upstairs on the spot. Busan's version of a food adventure.
Morning run along Haeundae Beach (flat, perfect 5K). Coastal capsule train along Haeundae Blueline Park (glass-floor Sky Capsule, ocean cliffs). Busan X the Sky observatory β 100+ floors above the city, coffee with the horizon. Afternoon: Gwangalli Beach β cafΓ© strip, views of the Gwangan Bridge. Evening: Gwangalli for the autumn fireworks festival (typically early October). Dwaeji gukbap for dinner β Busan's iconic pork rice soup.
Check out, KTX back to Seoul/ICN. UA892 departs ICN 4:50pm, arrives SFO 11:40am same day. 10h 50min nonstop.
We're doing this properly: one spa day in Seoul, one in Busan. The Korean body scrub (seshin) is the star β an ajumma scrubs off a winter's worth of dead skin in 30 minutes and you emerge feeling like a different person.
Coastal city on the southern tip. Beaches, sea-cliff temples, the country's best seafood market, and Gamcheon β a hillside village that looks like a Wes Anderson set. October is peak season to visit.
The tasting menu you loved last time. Casual 2F format, ~$120/pp, reservation via Catchtable. One of Seoul's best Wagyu experiences. Book early β fills up fast.
Day 2, morning: market tour at Mangwon Market + hands-on kimchi, bulgogi, japchae for the whole group. Chef-led, max 6 people, you eat what you make for lunch. ~$80β100/pp. Book via Viator or Airbnb Experiences.
Dragon Hill in Seoul (rooftop, themed saunas, scenic city-side setting) and Spa Land in Busan (the definitive Korean spa with 18 mineral pools). The seshin body scrub is a rite of passage.
Korea's largest seafood market. Walk past stalls of live octopus, abalone, and fresh catch. Point at what you want β the restaurant upstairs grills or serves it raw (hoe). Very Stanley-shrimp-allergy-navigable.
Seoul's coolest neighborhood in 2024/2025. MUSINSA Megastore, ADERERROR, Matin Kim. Bespoke leather shoes made to order on Shoe Street. More pop-up stores per block than anywhere else in Korea.
Buddhist temple built directly onto Busan's sea cliffs. One of the few coastal temples in Korea β dramatic autumn light, crashing waves below. Zero crowds compared to the Gyeongbokgung palaces in Seoul.
Two neighborhoods carry the best of Seoul fashion. Seongsu-dong is the flagship-and-pop-up hub β Time Out's 4th coolest neighborhood globally. Itaewon/Hannam is where the more editorial, designer-forward labels live.
Seongsu-dong
Itaewon / Hannam-dong
Park Hyatt Busan is booked on Hyatt points (Oct 10β14). Seoul is the remaining decision β both options below are cash, paid via Marriott Bonvoy.
Recommended: RYSE. ~$330 cheaper over 4 nights, direct Line 2 ride to Seongsu-dong (where we're shopping twice), and the Hongdae neighborhood matches what we liked last time.
Neighborhood: Hongdae β exactly what you liked last time. Local energy, indie boutiques, Korean BBQ everywhere, mostly local crowd. RYSE sits on Hongdae walking street with Blue Bottle in the lobby. Gentle Monster nearby. 5 min walk to Hongik Univ. Station (Line 2) β direct to Seongsu in ~25 min.
Running: Best flat river access. Run south 15β20 min to the Mapo/Yeouido section of the Han River β flat, car-free, 100km+ of paths. Door-to-river is the easiest of the three.
Trade-off: Rooms are on the smaller side. Pay cash β the points redemption here is poor value vs. saving Bonvoy points for a higher-end property.
Neighborhood: Banpo-dong/Seocho-gu β upscale residential, sits above Shinsegae Dept Store. JW Marriott is connected to Lines 3, 7, 9. Seorae Village (Seoul's French expat enclave, great cafΓ©s) is walking distance. Multiple rooms have Han River views.
Running: Closest 5-star hotel to the Han River south bank. Banpo Hangang Park is ~0.5 miles away β flat river path starts right there. Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain runs evenings through October. Best combination of nice hotel + flat river run.
Trade-off: Still above your $350 target even with the Google rate. Pay cash β same points-redemption logic as RYSE, not worth burning Bonvoy points here. Lines 3/7/9 means one transfer to Line 2 for Seongsu (~20 min total).
Both Marriott properties are cash-only β Bonvoy point redemptions here are poor value, so pay cash and save Chase points for Park Hyatt Busan (already booked, 20,000 Hyatt pts/night, Oct 10β14).
